What is a Blacksmith?

A blacksmith makes many kinds of tools and other objects out of metal. The blacksmith heats metal in a forge to make it soft, then hammers it on an anvil to shape it. The first metals used were iron and bronze. The two main methods of metalworking used to create decorative and functional items are forging and casting. Some basic equipment of a typical blacksmith shop was a forge and bellows, slack tup and anvil, hammer and tongs, cutter and swage, chisel and punch, and file and drill.

In 1810 Pennsylvania reported 2,562 blacksmith shops doing $1,572,627 worth of work. In 1850 the United States had 100,000 blacksmiths and whitesmiths, in addition to gunsmiths and machinists.July 8th at 11 am - Imagine Your Story Blacksmith - A local blacksmith will share their craft with us Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BCLYvonne Two images of blacksmiths at work, one at a forge, one shaping metal
